August Internet/E-Commerce SIG Meeting: What’s Your App?

What’s your app? It’s becoming a common question as society embraces iPhones and Blackberry smart phones. But what will it take for one smart phone to dominate the other? That’s the question Columbus AMA President Nick Iannitto asked Berkshire Software’s Justin Munger at the E-Commerce/Internet SIG on Thursday, August 20th. Watch the video and tell us what you think it will take to make one smart phone superior.

Who is Justin Munger? Justin is the Principal Software Developer at Berkshire Software, LLC and has been working with the iPhone since January 2009.  He got started with the iPhone because he was inspired to get a new phone due to slow-downs, lockups and miss calls but why did he choose the iPhone.  Because his friends were using it!  Isn’t that why we all decide to buy things?  So once Justin started downloading the apps and realized how cool they were and saw the “fortunes” to be made, he thought why not add a new skill?

So how much can marketers and developers make creating iPhone Applications?  A developer receives 70% of sales revenue wired to a bank account every month while Apple receives 30% and handles all marketing, credit card processing and hosting.  Not a bad deal!  A great example is Trism, a triangle puzzle game that made $250,000 in the first two months or iShoot, a tank-artillery game that made $37,000 in one day.

Justin’s presentation proved to businesses and marketers that business apps are proving to be a very popular category as the additional revenue stream the iPhone creates.

“Apps are now available world wide in 77 countries. With the recent news from Apple CEO Steve Jobs announcing last quarter, 5.2 million iPhones were sold, a 626 percent increase from a year ago, the customer base for iPhone apps is growing rapidly.”–Greg Weiss, founder of IPhone AppQuotes.

The key take away from Justin’s presentation and these statistics is that developing an iPhone app can create “fortune” for anyone!
